Description
Tennessee Onions are a rich and comforting Southern side dish made with layers of sweet onions smothered in creamy melted cheese, butter, and seasonings, baked to golden perfection — the ultimate cheesy comfort bake.
Ingredients
- 3 large sweet onions (Vidalia or yellow), sliced into 1/2-inch rings
- 4 tbsp butter, melted
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning (optional)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Peel and slice onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate them and spread evenly in the baking dish.
- Drizzle melted butter evenly over the onions.
- In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning (if using). Sprinkle over the onions.
- Top the onions with an even layer of the three cheeses — cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes, until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
Notes
- Vidalia or other sweet onions work best for this dish.
- Can be served as a side dish with steak, pork chops, or grilled chicken.
- Add crushed crackers or breadcrumbs on top before baking for a crispy texture.
- Make ahead and refrigerate before baking — increase bake time by 10 minutes if chilled.
