Description

Tennessee Onions are a rich and comforting Southern side dish made with layers of sweet onions smothered in creamy melted cheese, butter, and seasonings, baked to golden perfection — the ultimate cheesy comfort bake.

Ingredients

  • 3 large sweet onions (Vidalia or yellow), sliced into 1/2-inch rings
  • 4 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Peel and slice onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate them and spread evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Drizzle melted butter evenly over the onions.
  4. In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning (if using). Sprinkle over the onions.
  5. Top the onions with an even layer of the three cheeses — cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
  6. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes, until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  8. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Vidalia or other sweet onions work best for this dish.
  • Can be served as a side dish with steak, pork chops, or grilled chicken.
  • Add crushed crackers or breadcrumbs on top before baking for a crispy texture.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate before baking — increase bake time by 10 minutes if chilled.
